Gamepark newbie v3

   Utilities
Until just a few months ago, I believed the format that I created on Gamepark newbie to catalog GP32 and GP2X software was basically sufficient to cover all types of software that might get introduced into the community. However, specifically the release (and subsequent development and huge popularity) of GMenu changed my mind.

Now, this section isn't exclusively dedicated to GMenu. There have been various utilities released over the course of the GP2X's life; I just never viewed them entirely necessary to cover on a newbie website. In any case, this section will list and describe utilities, and you can decide whether you'd like to check them out or not. ;)

Battery Test is a useful little application by Puck2099 that will allow you to test the battery life of your rechargeables and some other variables that will help you determine which batteries work best. Instructions for use are described in the readme. Also you can check results other users had with their batteries (and maybe get an idea for what you should buy ;) Here and Here.

GMenu is an easy-to-install alternative to the standard GP2X frontend. Before you get confused, it is not similar to the alternate firmwares that could be loaded onto the GP32. At the core, GMenu is still running GP2X Linux.

The application uses the GP2X's autorun feature to bypass the stardard UI (User Interface) and go directly to GMenu. And why do this? GMenu offers many things that aren't available with the standard UI--the most important of these being GMenu's ability to directly link games and applications, so you don't have to browse to said application and then to the game. With GMenu, just choose the game, and GMenu will take you right to it.

Be advised, there is some set-up required to get everything working, but it's fairly painless. I hope to create a guide detailing the process sometime in the future.
